The President on Iran

The Iranian government must understand that the world is watching. We mourn each and every innocent life that is lost. We call on the Iranian government to stop all violent and unjust actions against its own people. The universal rights to assembly and free speech must be respected, and the United States stands with all who seek to exercise those rights.

As I said in Cairo, suppressing ideas never succeeds in making them go away. The Iranian people will ultimately judge the actions of their own government. If the Iranian government seeks the respect of the international community, it must respect the dignity of its own people and govern through consent, not coercion.

Martin Luther King once said – “The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.” I believe that. The international community believes that. And right now, we are bearing witness to the Iranian peoples’ belief in that truth, and we will continue to bear witness.

I hope the Iranian people overthrow these fascist theocrats and open their proud country up to democratic and more liberal (in the classical sense) values.  The United States should do whatever it can to support this without doing harm.  Some have called for Obama to explicitly endorse the opposition or even offer material support for them.  It seems too early for anything like that as that may be more counter productive – this revolution can’t be seen to be tainted by American influence but must be an organic homegrown rebellion.

The Skinny on the Skinny

A new study finds that although more muscular men tend to have more sexual partners they have a poor immune system compared to skinny men.  I just need to find the perfect balance I guess.

Compared to skinnies, muscular men also tended to produce fewer infection-fighting white blood cells and less of an important immune molecule called C-reactive protein, which helps destroy pathogens.

Ricky needs an agent

No, not that type of agent.  This type.  Humans naturally attribute agency to objects and phenomena which lead them to believe in the supernatural and in conspiracy theories.  As humans are pattern seeking animals we tend to find patterns even when they aren’t there (type I error).  Some people gravitate to religion for answers to the complexity of life; others assume some secret group or agent has more control over the economy than probably possible (e.g. The Federal Reserve, the globalists, Reptilians).

Agenticity carries us far beyond the spirit world. The Intelligent Designer is said to be an invisible agent who created life from the top down. Aliens are often portrayed as powerful beings coming down from on high to warn us of our impending self-destruction. Conspiracy theories predictably include hidden agents at work behind the scenes, puppet masters pulling political and economic strings as we dance to the tune of the Bilderbergers, the Roth schilds, the Rockefellers or the Illuminati. Even the belief that government can impose top-down measures to rescue the economy is a form of agenticity, with President Barack Obama being touted as “the one” with almost messianic powers who will save us.

Iranian Solidarity

Iran is possibly on the verge of another revolution and we need to show our support.  The fascist clerics and ruling parties are rigging elections and attempting to silence dissent by any means necessary including horrific violence.  Maybe in the west are unaware but the Iranian population is largely educated and pro-west.  Their government just gives them a bad reputation.

Also, amazing, Twitter is playing a surprisingly effective role in getting out information from the Islamic Republic.  This list is circulating around the resistance: (green is the color of the resistance)
1. Remove Khamenei from supreme leader because he doesn’t qualify as a fair supreme leader

2. Remove Ahmadinejad from president because he took it forcefully and unlawfully

3. Put Ayatollah Montazeri as supreme leader until a review group for the ghanooneh asasi ( “constitution” ) is set up

4. Recognize Mousavi as the official president

5. A goverment by Mousavi and start a reform of the constitution

6. Free all political prisoners without any ifs ands or buts, right away

7. Call off any secret organization such as “gasht ershad”
