    Anytime people argue over gay marriage I always bring up this point: Why in the hell does ANYONE need the government's permission to be married? Most people have never even thought of that.

    It's not about "permission". The government formally recognizes marriage with an official state certificate and corresponding benefits. If you're arguing that the state shouldn't be involved in the institution of marriage, and marriage should ONLY be a private contract between individuals than you won't get much of an argument from me. But if the state is going to interject itself in the institution than all people should receive equal treatment as established in the 14th amendment.
