Happy Birthday Lembit Opik!

Today’s my favorite Welsh Liberal Democrat’s birthday!  Despite all his public troubles with cheeky girls and other romances, it’s important to remember that Lembit is a serious MP that works extremely hard to make the lives of his constituents freer and better.  He’s amazingly intelligent and knowledgeable while maintaining his ability to novelly look at political and philosophical issues.  I’ll never forget my experience working with him and always be indebted to him for it.  His principles always excited me and I can always think of him whenever I get cynical about politics.

I remember campaigning for him one day and a voter complained to me that while she liked Lembit she couldn’t support him because he allowed a transvestite to campaign for him.  I tried to reason with the woman and she seemed to back off her stance after I explained among other things that Lembit couldn’t control who campaigns for him.  I relayed the story to Lembit thinking he’d laugh at the absurdity a bit and be thankful to me for winning back a vote for him.  Instead, he looked at me and explained that he never wanted me to do that again.  He doesn’t want any vote from someone that could be so shallow.  He announced his unwavering support for that faithful campaigner – he would rather lose the election than win by distancing himself from supporters like her.  Trying to carefully fit into an acceptable range within an intolerant voter’s prejudices just wasn’t an option for him.

    Definitely a charming man.

A complete and utter idiot – don't be taken in by him. A sham.

He had no reason to be fake to me – no reason to be "a sham." Is he perfect? Of course not. But he's absolutely a benefit to his constituents and to parliament.

In what way does parading a cheap popster tart around Montgomeryshire benefit his constituents? What a sham that relationship was! In what way does going on an all exes paid for luxury cruise whilst parliament was sitting benefit his constituents? In what way does claiming for 40" TVs, unpaid summonses for council tax, spectacles, cameras and cleaning ladies that didn't exist benefit his constituents? Then there's not turning up for a vote on closing post offices……how good is that for Mid Wales? And what about all those attention seeking causes like the Segway, soo relevant to Montgomeryshire…..Thank goodness he'll be replaced by a proper grwon up politician in the form of Glyn Davies. Lembit Opik is the most dishonest man in the House, the biggest ego and a total sham. He's of benefit to no one

I'm glad you've decided to look at his record so dispassionately…
