    I think that this overstates the prevalence of tipping in France by locals. Most of the time people just leave a few extra euros for good service but it isn’t expected. Waiters get paid a living wage.

      You would know but, it says “up to 10%.” So on a 50E bill if you leave a “few extra euros” wouldn’t that be roughly accurate?

    Dan, you are right that it says “up to 10%”, but it does conclude with saying that foreigners “on the other hand” aren’t expected to tip except for exceptional service. This implies that the French are expected to tip for less than exceptional service, which isn’t really the case.

    As a waiter in America you should avoid French customers like the plague. Willingly trade tables with another waiter by saying “I’ll let you have the rich Europeans. I’ve had good tables tonight.”
